2013 – the year in review

by Julie Frayn on December 29, 2013 in  Bric-a-brac

2013 was a roller coaster year. Highs with altitudes that rivaled the peak of Mount Everest. Lows that sent me tumbling back down to level ground. Here is a list of just a few of the… accomplishments? Some of them. Some are trials, a couple of tribulations. And one celebration. Kind of. In an ‘oh my dog I’m HOW old?’ kind of way.

Published two books. Three if you count the short story collection. Yeah, that counts. Three it is. Three books published. Will try to do that again in 2014.

Won another Nano. Not the NanoWriMo in November, too much going on for that this year. Camp Nano. Same thing, different month, 50,000 plus words in 30 days. Yup. Rocked it. Editing the resultant novel now, with a plan to publish in the first quarter of 2014.

Turned fifty. The big five-oh. Half a freaking century. How did that happen? I still feel pretty young. Most days. Except when I glance at my hands, at the veins and lines and crepe-like skin. Dang. Fifty….

Dodged a few medical bullets. Maybe not bullets. Threats of bullets. Medical blanks. In other words, I’m fine, thank you very much, spiking cholesterol and one potential kidney stone that might not exist notwithstanding.

Went to New York City!!! Yes, three exclamation points. Even that is not enough. Must. Go. Back…

Lost seventeen pounds. Yes I did. Gained five back over Christmas. Yes I did.

Supported my systir and mother through their medical bullets. No blanks. Direct hits, though so far, not fatal. Just critical condition. Yeah, I’m holding onto the ‘just.’ Tried to be there for them as much as possible, doctor’s visits, treatments, housework and home renos, and in mom’s case, taking over the financial reins. Sometimes I turtled, hid in my house, drank some wine, buried my feelings behind pragmatism and competence and the occasional binge of television crime drama. Okay, more than occasional.

Welcomed a new family member. Nephew Evan, adorable baby extraordinaire, my brother’s ‘mini-me’ – perfect in every way.

Won “Indie Book of the Day” on www.indiebookoftheday.com for Suicide City. And became a beggar for votes, nearly spamming family and friends into unfollowing me when its cover survived to the semi-finals in the Authorsdb 2013 cover contest (winner announcement in January *bites nails*). A side benefit – made the Authorsdb top 50 authors list. Woot!

Took part in “IndieVengeance Day” in Dallas. Met 16 other indie authors, including my wonderful editor, Scott Morgan, and the gregarious queen of the snort, Amber Jerome~Norrgard. Made new friends, discovered a new drink, satisfied my inner conspiracy theorist in Dealey Plaza. And, you know, my first book signing. That happened.

Watched my baby girl enter university and blow it out of the water. Full five-course load. Scholarship. 4.0 GPA. English essay to be used as an example for future students of the RIGHT way to write an essay. Boom! That was my mother’s heart bursting with pride.

Kept the two antique dogs alive through another Christmas tree. Or maybe they kept themselves alive, stubborn little buggers. Or maybe Rascal, the about-to-turn-twenty-three year-old beagle has been dead for years and is our own, live-in zombie dog. Yeah, that’s it.

It was a year of trying hard. A year of accomplishments. A year of realizing a dream. And a year filled with fear and uncertainty. Worked my ass off, and spent just as much time hiding from everything when it got to be too much. Imagine if I skipped the hiding? I could take over the world! Or not…

I done good. Or at least, good enough.

Sounds like a good year to me. :) Well, in spite of the lows. Two books published? Score. Finishing a Nano that LED to a novel. Score. NYC?!? Yeah, that’s cool. I’m sorry about all the health issues – with you and your family. We all power through, though, don’t we? I, too, look forward to a positive 2014. Here’s to getting things done. :)

You done good, more than good. You are the best… in my heart, and in the hearts of all us blood kin – non vampiric kind. Highs, lows and in-betweens, you done the best… Hiding is just part of who we are, I get it love.

Big Systir

Well I wonder what the vampiric kin think of me? Hah. Ew… I like the highs. The in-betweens are where I live. The lows can suck it. But I guess they are unavoidable, so powering through with a chance of hiding is in the forecast for 2014 again

I’d say you kicked 2013’s arse, lady! I think I mostly napped and wrote 4 blog posts! Wishing your family healing, health & a boat-load of happiness in the new year!
P.S. I had a vicarious pride moment hearing of your smart, smart, essay-winning daughter. How cool is that?

And 4 awesome blog posts they were! Thanks for the perfect wishes Tori. I hope the same for you, along with a healthy dose of arse-kicking. And very cool on the vicarious pride. The real thing is truly heart-bursting. I’m sure you already know that :)
