Buttery nipples and cock-sucking cowboys

And other new terms I learned at Indie-Vengeance Day

October 12, 2013. Indie Vengeance Day. A day that will live in infamy. Well, maybe not. But it will be a day, no, an entire extended weekend, that I will never forget.

I was one of 17 indie authors gathered in Dallas, Texas to hock their books, garner readers, meet other authors (because who can understand what a writer goes through more than another writer?), and just generally have a hell of a lot of fun. I travelled from Canada, three arrived from down under, and the rest trickled in from all over the US of A.

Here just a small shot of what I learned:

Tiny Australian women get louder the more they drink. That may also be true of Canadian women. But I’m not telling.

In Australia, they don’t have cowboys. They have stockmen. Men I say! No boys…

A buttery nipple and a cock-sucking cowboy are the same thing. A shooter made of butterscotch schnapps, Bailey’s, and melon liqueur. It’s like shooting candy. The first is the American name. The second the Aussie name. Which begs the question – why are they not called cock-sucking stockmen?

There is a lot of Tex-Mex in Texas.

Not all sangria is created equal. Same for guacamole. Mine is better. That applies to both. (No arguing, Amber. You’ll just have to come to Calgary to taste the proof).

After just a few hours exposure to several southern accents, y’all sneaks into the vocabulary.

X marks the spot. Two spots. At the site of the original nightmare on Elm Street, in Dealey Plaza, two x’s are painted on the road to mark the first shot and the kill shot where JFK lost his life. Two x’s painted on the road. Creepy. And deliciously morbid.

Between New York’s sucking, and Dallas being sold out, I may never get a decent piece of cheesecake.

And the book signing was pretty awesome too! In addition to the authors, I chatted with readers, with aspiring writers and indie authors not on the line up for the signing. There was a lot of laughter, some books were sold, some were traded for other books. And maybe best of all, I got to meet my editor face-to-face. It was a wonderful day.

Here is the lineup of all the wonderful authors that I met and bonded with. Please have a look. There’s something for every taste, from poetry to erotica, romance to zombies (sometimes both at once), non-fiction, and short stories.

Ciara Ballintyne (Australia) Confronting the Demon – fantasy

Justin Bog (Washington) Sandcastle and Other Stories – fiction collection

Sreya Bremtin (Texas) From a Season of Sleep – poetry

Susie Clevenger (Texas) Dirt Road Dreams – poetry

Melissa Craig (Australia) Simply Breathtaking Series – erotica

Ben Ditmars (Ohio) Night Poems – poetry

M.E. Franco (California) The Dion Series – paranormal

indievengeance

Excellent! We’re making some tonight. You busy? 😀

Michael Rogers October 18, 2013 at 9:11 am

That’s a lot to learn in a short period of time! I don’t know who told you the recipe for Buttery Nipples and CS-Cowboys had melon liqueur in them, but I know BN’s do not. Don’t think I could choke them down otherwise (like what I did there?)(ignore me).

Had a blast and when I invade Canada in the coming years–it’s inevitable, I hit #1 there for a few hours a couple months ago–I’ll be expecting a similar weekend to the one just completed. I look forward to seeing all Canada has to offer–or at least your neck of the woods.

Write on!

Michael

I couldn’t remember the ingredients so I googled. Because if it’s on the internet it has to be true. No? Ah well. You didn’t choke on them Saturday night! Went down smooth as. . . never mind.

Canada would love you. There is a big zombie fan-base up here, my son included. Though the romance part will probably scare him off. He did love your cover though! :)

It was such a great time. Loved chatting with you. I just wish I could have stayed longer and without a wheelchair!!

You too, Susie. You managed great even with the wheels. Hm, that could be your new handle. “Wheels o butterfly” :D.

Hugs, Julie. I hope to get to Canada to see you. On my list! :o)

That would be a blast, Tracy. Just make sure it’s THIS part of Canada! It’s kind of big up here.

Agree on all counts! My kids love your cover, and my daughter is first in line to read both your books :)

Scott Morgan October 19, 2013 at 2:52 pm

Well, Canada IS known for its guacamole… All I know is, it’s better here than it was where I grew up. :)

And yeah, it was a blast seeing you in person. Too short a time for so eternal a journey…

We are famous for so much, but most of the world thinks our accomplishments are American. Except being too nice 😀 An eternal journey – cool. I like that. Come here for Stampede. We’ll boycott it together.

It sounds (and looks) like it was excellent fun! I enjoy the Facebook posts, too. Of course before reading this blog, you had me at cock-sucking cowboys, but this is a family blog, isn’t it?? :) Kidding. So glad to know you’re all pursuing your dream of writing and taking it to those next, crucial levels. Perhaps, someday, I’ll be able to rub elbows with the likes of you all. Good work! :)

Oh Sean, you crack me up. We rub virtual elbows all the time! It was definitely fun to meet these folks in person. One day I’d like to do that with you, Jason, Sheila, among others 😀
