Hop on board the blog hop!

by Julie Frayn on July 30, 2014 in  Writing

My dear friend and awesome editor, Scott Morgan, invited me to a blog hop. I can’t say no to that guy! Have you met Scott? If not, you ought to. He’s an editor extraordinaire who has made me a better writer. I take every bit of his advice to heart, and edit the crap out of my stuff until it passes his muster. (I almost did a 1972 thing and typed “passed his mustard”). If you need an editor that won’t blow sunshine up your WIP, one who detests BS and practices what he preaches (write for the jugular!), then you need to get in touch with him.

Now for the hop. I’m to answer the four questions below, then in a couple of weeks, two more authors will hop on the blog hop and dazzle you with their own writing prowess.

1. What am I working on?

I have a couple of things on the go. A short story collection based on characters I see waiting at bus stops. I guess based on actual people I see, then turned into characters. I’m also mid way through my fourth novel, a fictional account of my parents’ love affair set in the ’40s and ’50s. Kind of historical romance I guess. *shudder* Really? Historical Romance? Me??? I must be growing…

2. How does my work differ from others in its genre?

I don’t write to genre, but so far a lot of my work falls into general fiction and women’s fiction. I am lapping at the rim of the literary fiction bowl. How is it different? Perhaps due to painful honesty. No holds barred. If it’s gritty and real and hard to read, I’ll write it.

3. Why do I write what I do?

Now that’s a loaded question. Mental instability perhaps? A deep desire to kill? But no, not true. I write real life, and all the grit and horror that often accompanies it. Sometimes the real world isn’t pretty, and that’s where I find my writing sweet-spot. Maybe because it is the exact opposite to how I am in my normal life. Quiet and mild-mannered with drama only found in books and on the television screen makes for some pretty boring fiction, don’t you think?

4. How does my writing process work?

What process? But seriously folks – I am a word vomiter. That’s how I get started, open brain, puke words. Ignore spelling and grammar, capitalize anything that needs a blank filled in, like NAME or COLOUR, until I figure out what I want. Clean up the mess later. After the initial spew, I revisit, reshape, and keep on writing, sometimes throwing up a few more times when I get stuck. Gross, eh?

And now I pass the blog hop torch to two women I am honoured to share the title ‘author’ with.

mirandaMiranda Gargasz is the author of Lemonade and Holy Stuff, a collection of poignant essays about everyday life. Her message? “Cling to the little things in life. They make it so much worth the living.”

Miranda is flexing her writing muscles and trying her hand at fiction with her first paranormal mystery. Go, Miranda!

You can find Miranda’s blog here, and follow her on twitter here.

RHRamsayRH Ramsey is an author after my own heart. She writes about tough stuff, like domestic violence, abuse, addiction, and mental illness with honesty, and without apology. Sound familiar? No wonder we get along…

You can find RH on her blog here, and follow her on twitter here.

OK, ladies – get hopping!

You always say such nice things about me :)

I love your answers. just like your stories — simple and direct, but as deep as Lake Tahoe (it’s pretty deep, look it up if you don’t believe me).

Well, that’s because you’re so nice. :) I like that – simple, direct, deep as Lake Tahoe. I believe you, but I looked it up anyway (2nd deepest lake in the US). Thanks!
