My cherry got popped

by Julie Frayn on April 18, 2012 in  Writing

My agency rejection cherry I mean.

I finally got around to sending out queries for my first novel. Only five so far. I’m wading in slowly you see. I’ve never been a diver, not even a swimmer. I’m just a wader.

Less than twenty-four hours after sending those five little emails, I got a response! A rejection, of course. I expected that, I don’t have my head up my, er, I mean in the sand.

She was very gentle.  Even called me by my own name. But I knew it was a form rejection with just enough personalization to make you go, ‘huh.’ I’ve seen the very same words on querytracker.com and of other sites where writers share their query successes, failures, joys and frustrations.

Wait, did I just use ‘joy’ in the same sentence as ‘query?’ I need to up my meds.

There is no joy in queryville. Even if you are lucky enough to get a request for pages, representation, even just a few kind words – it’s not the query itself that is joyful. It’s the response! It’s like dieting. There is no joy in denying yourself the foods you love. But dropping the weight? Hallelujah! End – joy. Means – justified.

So, the pressure is off. The cherry is popped. The query hymen is blown to smithereens. Now I can get out there and be a total query slut. I’m sure I’ll get repeatedly screwed in the process. But at least I’ll have fun doing it.

And I don’t have to shave my legs.

Something like that… Relieved the first time wasn’t as painful as I thought it would be. But it wasn’t good either. 😀

Haha, thanks for this post! Nothing like a little innuendo to kick a Monday morning in the pants.

You’re welcome, Jim. Is there ever a bad time for inappropriate humor? 😀
